How Are You Marketing Cattle in the 21st Century

Has your cattle marketing transitioned with the improvements in technology or set in tradition of the local livestock auction barn?

As the technology changed over the years so has the way ranchers are marketing cattle. The younger generations taking over family farms and the multi-generations becoming more involved we see a swing in the cattle markets. Over the past 10 yrs you have seen a shift in livestock auction barns closing down and sale day numbers lower than years past at some of the smaller auction barns. There are still a number of special/select sales that bring in a crowd for pedigree and genetics.

Technology has brought in a whole new way for cattlemen to market their cattle. In years past cattle were hauled to the local auction barn and viewed by other cattlemen in your county. Today you can post cattle on the world wide web and guess what, the world can see your cattle. The intrawebnet has given the tech-savvy rancher an advantage in cattle marketing.

When it comes to selling your cattle online you have plenty of social media market place groups, websites, and mobile apps with little to no charge to buy & sell cattle. How hard is it to list cattle online, can you take a picture with your phone and send a text message? Many of the online marketing platforms are that simple for anyone that can work their way around a smart phone.

The livestock auction barns are not setting idle during this wave of technology they too are adapting. Many of the livestock auctions have included the use of the world wide web in their live sales. You can jump online to register with a particular sale barn and bid during the live auctions from the comfort of home.

As technology, ranching generations, and eating habits change the cattleman will have to change along with the times. As someone who has seen things change over the years, nothing beats breakfast and chit chat at the local auction barn cafe.
